Happy Friday! I'm excited to introduce the second post in my new series, and show some of the great clutches that my fellow bloggers are loving right now.

I will admit that I mostly like the idea of a clutch, but when it comes down to it, I like some kind of a strap so I don't have to actually hold on to the bag. However, some bags are worth making an exception, like the Optical Weave Izzie Clutch by Cole Haan. There are several colors, but I love the bright orange one!

Splurge vs Steal: Striped Throw Blanket

Those who know me in real life (and online, I guess) know that I refuse to spend three-digit sums of money on throw blankets or pillows. If I see one I love, I'll find an alternative or I will not have it at all because I am both stubborn and (selectively) practical.

Lately, I've been on the hunt for a graphic throw blanket to drape over my couch and add more pattern to my living room. I've long admired classic striped throws, and want something washable since I have indoor dogs. Luckily, I stumbled across a $19.99 gem at Ikea that is a dead ringer for a $99 throw from Bed, Bath and Beyond.

I'm sure the more expensive blanket is softer, but I have plenty of other throws to roll around in. This one is decorative, and I'm pretty happy to have saved $80! Here's how I'm using it (excuse the crappy phone picture):

Styles for thick hair + Best invention ever

You may recall that I have a long track record of attempting the cute hairdos I see on blogs and my hair board on Pinterest with little success because my hair is roughly twice as thick as the average person's.

Imagine my excitement when my friend Phoebe sent me this blog post from Modcloth with three cute styles designed for those of us with tons of hair!

I'm sure there are about 5 more of you out there who will benefit from this, but having not come across anything like this in the past few years, I couldn't resist sharing.

And while we're talking about hair, I can't not mention these awesome new hair bands from Goody. They're made to look like bracelets, and now I look much more put together with a ponytail holder on my wrist every day. At $4.99, they're worth it! I've picked up the silver and gold sets (3 per pack) and wearing 2-3 at once holds my hair up just fine.

Resurrected: Domino Magazine!

I'm sure my post is one of hundreds on this topic today, but I don't care. It's not often that something like this happens - the much beloved Domino magazine, victim of Recession 2009, is back with a special issue.

There don't seem to be many details online yet, but I'm hopeful that it's not just a "greatest hits" collection of stories and features some new, original content.

Bold, Affordable Art: Cozamia

Every time I come across an affordable source for artwork, I feel compelled to share it. A couple of weeks ago, I discovered Cozamia (thanks to Annie and Elizabeth at The Now) and am in love with the bold, graphic prints. Large scale art can be expensive, and these prints are a perfect option if you don't have tons of cash to spend. A large, unframed posted is only $46.99!

What I Wore + Gallery Wall Sneak Peek

Happy Monday! Hopefully everyone had a great super bowl weekend. I spent hours cleaning my house in preparation for guests, and finally invested the time I needed to pull my living and dining area together. You may recall that my original attempt at a gallery wall was a bit underwhelming, and I have been obsessively pinning inspiration photos on Pinterest in preparation for my second attempt.

Armed with more frames and a better plan, I spent Sunday afternoon hammering and hanging pictures. I'll share proper photos once my photographer friend comes to photograph my home (finally, there will be a proper tour) but here's a sneak peek:

The empty spot on the left side really isn't that big, but the angle is deceiving.

Remember when everyone filled out 50+ step chain letters and sent them to huge groups of friends when email was new and you logged on hoping to see a full inbox? My, how times have changed. I get 100-200 emails per day and dream of escaping Outlook forever.

One thing I do miss, though, is learning random things about other people. When Emily Kate, Washington DC stylist and author or Capital Style, gave me a blog award with a nostalgic chain letter theme I thought it would be fun to play along. I am a huge fan of hers, and dream of following her footsteps and pursuing a job doing what I love. I encourage you to check out her site, and hit her up for personal styling services if you're in the DC area.

11 Random Things About Me:

1. I am a car singer. I convince myself that I sound like Miranda Lambert sometimes (I don't) and often have a sore throat after long trips.

2. I don't like for rugs and furniture to be crooked, and I will fix other people's chairs if they're not perfectly parallel.

3. As a child, I spoke with a fake British accent more often than was normal. However, I'm still quite good at it and have pretended to be a tourist in bars to get free drinks.

4. I sing songs to my dogs about how I love them and make rhymes with their names.

5. I hate pickles and will spit out a mouthful of sandwich in public if they make it into my mouth.

6. I had a pet cow when I was about 3. Her name was Kristy.

7. I believed that deer immediately fall down dead when shot with a rifle until I was 23. My dad lied. However, I LOVE venison and understand the need for hunting in Texas.

8. In high school I woke up one morning on vacation and there was a baby roach deep in my ear. I almost died.

9. I refuse to gaze upon the bumper stickers of anyone advertising their political beliefs on the back of a vehicle. I purposely look away and think "Take that, you nut. I refuse to read your propaganda."

10. I probably look at Facebook about 5 times per day. However, I just can't get into Twitter.

Magazines and other blogs inspire me to wear my clothes in new ways and try to make my space more special and unique. So many people have such amazing taste and talent!

I used to shop at Martin+Osa a lot, before they went out of business, and got to know the staff at the NorthPark store. My favorite sales associate, Bruce, made fun of me for always buying cardigans and pretended to rip one from my hands and said "Let it go, you cardigan junkie!"

A few weeks ago at a bar with friends I hadn't seen in a long time.

If I Had $1000... Investment Pieces for 2012

Forget having $1,000,000 - I'd be pumped to have $1,000 to spend on anything I wanted without having a guilty conscience. I'm all about getting the most bang for your buck, but some things are worth a 3-digit price tag.

If I had money to burn, here's what I'd be scooping up right now:

Those shoes are just sick, and I would create outfits around them all summer. Plus, I've been lusting after the Brompton hobo for months now and would carry it on my arm while I flash my fantasy Kendra Scott bracelet and wear my summery Sheridan French ikat tunic. Unfortunately, the Lizzie Fortunato iPad case doesn't seem to be available to fill my future purse, but a girl can dream.

Yay or Nay? Bold Bright Colors

I (obviously) love seeing how other people make outfits, and getting a glimpse into their taste via blogs and the magic of Pinterest. It's interesting to see how the outfits people actually wear are actually much more tame than the things pictured online. I'm guilty myself, as you can see from my weekly outfit recaps, and often resort to jeans and a black top when I am running late.

One of my ongoing goals is to wear my clothes in new ways, and I've tried to wear bright colors the majority of the week. My addiction to bright corduroy pants makes this easier, but I've noticed that I'm quite an anomaly in the real world, where I've caught yoga pant moms at Target giving me odd looks. In addition, my own husband admitted that he's not a fan of my bright pants and bold colored ballet flats. (To which I answered "Too bad!" and my friend declared that straight men do not understand the awesome that is red pants)

So, my question is, are you a fan of wearing bright colors in your everyday life, or is it a trend that you hope will pass?

Trend To Try: Monochrome

Happy Monday! Hopefully everyone had a nice weekend - I sure enjoyed mine. The Gilt sale was worth $5 admission, but didn't quite live up to the lofty description in the emails. However, I did score some Kendra Scott and Kenneth Jay Lane earrings for $10 each (!!!), a leather makeup bag, and a cool brown zebra print tote that zips into a leather pouch all for $50. There were some great deals to be had in the shoe section, but the selection of size 9s was pretty small compared to the other sizes. I saw Pour La Victoire boots for $80, and Cole Haan pumps for $69... all for women who could fit into an 8. Sad day.

However, I did see some lovely Dallas fashionistas and was inspired by a few outfits I observed in line. I've not tried the whole monochrome outfit trend yet, but I'm thinking I should give it a go. What do you think?

Giveaway: MyMemories Software Suite!

Today I'm excited to offer a giveaway courtesy of MyMemories - a suite of software used to create scrapbooks and basic graphics. I intentionally don't host a lot of giveaways here, but I think this product is a great, affordable option for people who want the ability to create graphics without investing in expensive software like the Adobe suite right away. Plus, it's actually easy to use!

If you're not sure that you're serious about blogging or creating your own graphics, I think that the MyMemories suite would be an ideal first step and help get your feet wet. I was able to create the image below in about 8 minutes using MyMemories for the first time (the outfit collage is all one image):

I am giving an honest review when I saw that a lot of the pre-made templates and treatments are not my cup of tea, but the software will pull whatever fonts you have installed on your computer and offers the same color gradients as more advanced programs. You can easily import photos and frame them, and add text or other shapes without any design experience at all. I plan to try my hand at a modern wedding album using the 12x12" page templates since I've yet to get around to making one and my wedding was in 2010!

New Blog Series + What I Wore

Happy Friday! This week has dragged on forever here at my desk, so I cannot wait for this weekend to begin. I'm pumped to visit the Gilt warehouse sale tomorrow morning with my friend Megan - hopefully my eBay money can offset the cost of one nice, new item worthy of space in my closet!

I'm excited to be starting a new blog series that I'd like to get contributions for each week. I love offering exposure to other bloggers, and meeting new e-friends along the way, but I wanted to create an opportunity that isn't a big time commitment. Rather than solicit entire guest posts, I've decided that each week I'll compile a collection of items that other bloggers consider a must-have for that week's theme. I am a sucker for beautiful pictures, fashion, and talented people, so it took me all of 10 seconds to check out Inslee By Design when I saw this illustration on Pinterest:

How wonderful is that?! The details are perfect, and my new goal is to commission a family picture (with N and pups) for our next Christmas card. Another wonderful thing is that Inslee has an online store, and her 8x10 prints are all $20 or less! I think a collection of these prints would be perfect for a girly space like an office (that isn't shared) or a dressing area.

Reader Request: Styling a Striped Cardigan

This week's reader request comes from Sarah, of Life: An Observation and it is right up my alley. She just got this cute striped cardigan and wants some ideas on how to wear it. Since cardigans make up about 1/4 of my closet, I was happy to oblige.

I think jewel tones look great with black and white, and you can't go wrong with dark wash straight leg jeans and a classic trench this winter. The same cardigan will also look nice with a bright skirt and white or black blouse for the office. And finally, as it starts to get warmer you can layer the cardigan over a chambray button down (or tank top) this spring when the weather starts to cool down at night.

Weekend Recap: Jean Paul Gaultier + Blogger Brunch

Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. Mine was busy, but I'm ready for another week of work before the Gilt Warehouse Sale in Dallas on Saturday morning (who else is going?).

Yesterday, I finally made my way to the Dallas Museum of Art to take in the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit, and it was absolutely amazing. I highly encourage everyone in this general area of the country to come see it before it departs for San Francisco in a few weeks. Never again will I be inches away from haute couture and so completely in awe of the craftsmanship and artistic point of view.

I wasn't allowed to take pictures, but the local media outlets were and I wanted to share some photos of the exhibit so you can feel like you were there too:

Some of the mannequins had faces projected onto them so that they blinked, spoke and appeared incredibly/creepily lifelike, and there were pieces spanning almost 40 years of collections. There were more corsets and conical bras than you will ever see in one room again, and various gowns worn by the likes of Marion Cotillard, Dita VonTeese, and Sarah Jessica Parker. I loved it.

I also found this blog from the DMA curators to be really interesting, and it gave me quite an appreciation for what went into installing the exhibit I enjoyed.

Besides staring at fashion on Sunday afternoon, I also got the chance to spend Saturday morning with several amazing local bloggers who will be attending the Texas Style Council conference in March. I secured a roommate for the weekend (Michelle at Spangled Paraphernalia) and got to meet Elissa of Dress With Courage, whose point of view and talent for thrifting makes me want to dig through racks of old clothes. I'm excited to meet new friends who don't think I'm weird to be writing this right now, and look forward to making many more in March.

Happy Friday! Hopefully you all had a great week. Mine was busy, but punctuated with the arrival of some online purchases that I was pumped about. (My shopping guilt was assauged by money I'm guaranteed to make with my eBay sales.)

One of the boxes (some shoes from Gilt that I bought with credits) went back in the mail, but my J.Crew Factory package was fabulous and I wanted to share one of my deals with you.

Shoes for teenagers... and me.

I am usually one of the first one to announce that buying quality shoes is one of the top shopping commandments. I've had my poor feet maimed by deceptively cute shoes from Target, and am always glad to have invested in good quality heels that don't give me blisters.

However, I sometimes make an exception. I don't like investing in trends until I know they're going to be around a while, and since my shopping budget is $50-100 per month I cannot afford to spring for the $280 version of my favorite styles. Or any style. Thank goodness for juniors retailers like Lulu's, where you can find some really cute styles for under $40 (except the the blue wedges).

In a moment of weakness, I ordered the green flats with the gold medallion because they're $18 and I've already made more than that in my eBay auctions. I'll let you know how they work out!

I know that knockoffs are a touchy subject in blogland. Nobody would want a design of their own reproduced and sold for much less, and I get that. However, I am not so sympathetic to the needs of J.Crew that I would pass up a look I love at a price I can actually afford.

Since I keep getting strangers coming up to me and asking about my necklace, and keep seeing more and more bubble necklaces popping up on Pinterest, I've decided to share my little secret.

If you love this necklace but can't swing the $150 price...

You can buy a similar one from a shop called basilthecat on Etsy. Mine is very vibrant and sturdy and I freaking love it. I got it last year when the trend first surfaced, and never looked back. I also have a gray version (from another seller) and see that and red available for order.

So, now you can rock the trend for a third of the price. However, my real life friends are hereby forbidden from ordering the teal version. :)

Reader Request: Styling Nude Pumps

I would like to make a confession today. This weekend, I discovered a pair of nude Corso Como pumps that I FORGOT THAT I OWNED. I had tried to sell them on eBay earlier this year, but with no success and so they sat in the back corner of the closet. Now I've decided to just work with a little bit of pain because they are so freaking versatile I can't believe I haven't been wearing them. Clearly I have too many shoes.

This week's request (via comment) could not have been more timely. My friend Laura wanted to know how to style some nude pumps she got for Christmas, and I'm newly excited about mine. So, here's some combinations I threw together to show that you really can't go wrong with a pair of nude pumps:

Weekend Recap + Shop My Closet

Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a great weekend with lots more time to relax than I had. I was super productive and finally took the time to properly purge and organize my closet and then list the best of the clothes on eBay in hopes of scoring some money for new things this year.

I will be the first to admit that I have a ridiculous amount of clothes, since I constantly find great deals and am slow to throw things away even if I haven't worn them since 2010. I had not washed clothes since Christmas and still had a full closet, which was a big wake-up call to me. I spent all of Saturday afternoon purging, rearranging what was left, and then photographing/measuring the items worthy of a new home. I feel much calmer when I open my closet door now, and can see all of the things I like to wear so I won't forget about them.

The purging was especially hard because I'd already gotten rid of the things I don't like and everything left was stuff that I could see myself wearing in the right situation. I was ruthless in my sorting, and am actually parting with some nice stuff because I have not worn it in a year or more. I only chickened out on a few pieces, but they're hung in the back of the closet to see if I even miss them.

Here's the after pic of my half of the space, which believe it or not, is a huge improvement. I am proof that you can share a non-walk in closet and live to tell about it.

That said, I now have 18 eBay auctions in progress and if you wear a size 8-14 you may want to check them out. All of the auctions will end on Friday afternoon, so place a bid if you see anything you want! I'll also be dropping off a load of things at the Salvation Army, and set aside some dresses I hate to part with but am not wearing for the Texas Style Council clothing swap at the conference in March.

In other news, I cut my hair and took a new passport picture in preparation for this summer's vacation. Did you know it costs $110 to change the name on a passport more than a year old? I didn't. However, I like my haircut and am getting used to having more bangs and a lot less length. It was getting out of hand! Here's what the customs agent will see when they look at my passport (I feel so weird not smiling in a photo, so I tried really hard to look pleasant):

Copycat Wanted: C+B Echelon Side Table

As I've mentioned, I'm on the hunt for a new end table for my living room. The current table is from Target and was purchased in 2005 with my college graduation gift cards. It's now falling apart, and I need something new to go in a room with many different wood tones. I decided that I'd like something metal or with a marble top, but I've searched high and low to no avail.

Dream Table must also have storage capabilities, so the whole tray on a stand look is not going to work for our iPad, coasters and bonanza of remotes. I had almost given up when I came across this baby:

I can't find anything similar, but I know that I'm not as in tune with furniture retailers as I should be. I have checked out: Overstock, West Elm, Ballard, Wisteria, Urban Home, Jayson Home, jcpenney, Macy's, Pottery Barn, CB2, Burke Decor, Layla Grace / Zinc Door, Restoration Hardware, World Market, Room & Board, Serena and Lily, and Z Gallerie. I've also checked out some vintage stores in Dallas, but not as many as I'd like.

Spring 2012: Season of stripes?

Even though it's still very much winter, retail calendars dictate that spring merchandise is here and we should be snapping it up. I like seeing the new collections at my favorite stores, and couldn't help but notice quite a trend when I was perusing the new collection at LOFT:

Apparently stripes are all the rage this year. I'm a fan, with some caveats that I thought I'd share:

In my opinion, anyone can wear stripes on top but the shape of the garment becomes very important. A piece that's fitted will not make you look wide, unlike like one that hangs off of you and obscures redeeming features like a small waist. Also, the width of the stripe matters, and small to medium stripes are generally more wearable. I especially like pieces that are not uniformly striped, such as those with a solid shoulder or mix of widths.

I think it's very difficult to wear horizontal stripes around your hips and thighs, and although many may disagree (and that's fine), it's best left to those with a thin to average body shape since the stripes draw attention to and define the width of your body. The same goes for really boxy shaped pieces with wide stripes - it plays a trick on the eye that's hard to overcome unless you're truly quite thin.

I also think that striped pants are best left to circus performers.

Got it? Now go buy some stripes.

My Todd Oldham Corner: DIY Artwork

I haven't done as much sharing of my completed home renovation as I'd like because, to be honest, my camera is shitty. No picture I take looks decent compared to everyone else's, and until I can upgrade this summer or bribe a friend to come over, your glimpse into our space will be limited.

However, I recently finished a quick makeover of one corner of my living room, and wanted to share it since I think it turned out pretty cute for about $80. I was inspired by this photo of Todd Oldham's living room, with his huge collection of Charley Harper prints.

Since Charley Harper is one of my favorite artists, I was eager to bring more of his work into my space and I already had two framed calendar pages in another room. So, I purchased two more Ribba frames from Ikea and selected two more pages from my trusty wall calendar, then watched as N hung them in a grid above my grandmother's antique console table. I finished the area with a lamp from my mom, some candles and vases, and my red wooden shoes from when I was 7 (because I like them).

I like how the prints are a bit silly (who else has a 12x12 picture of an otter hanging around?) and they fill the space nicely. I may move them to a child's room one day in the (distant) future, but for now they make me smile and that's what a good room should do, right?

In other news, I am completely enamored with this rug at West Elm and will be stalking it until it goes on sale and then putting it in our dining area.

Game changer: Almost skinny jeans

Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a nice weekend. I finally got to spend time at home, for the first week in a long time, and it was wonderful. I read magazines, went end table shopping (with no success) and spent time with friends turning 30. One thing I found that made my week was a new pair of jeans. Since finding a great fit is rare, I thought I'd share with the rest of you.

I have pretty curvy hips, muscular thighs and a small waist. Needless to say, true skinny jeans don't look great on me. However, I am completely enamored with the LOFT Modern Straight Leg jeans. They offer the same look, but the fabric doesn't cling around my calves and I look way taller and thinner than I do in other pants. This discovery just changed my wardrobe.

I guess Stacy and Clinton really do know what they're talking about ;) Plus, you can pick up your own pair for under $45.

And since the weather has been unseasonably warm and gorgeous, here's how I wore them:

Cowhide: Not just for cowboys anymore

I think it's funny to watch your tastes evolve and grow, even within the span of a few months. Take me for example: I generally hate western things. This makes shopping on Craigslist in Texas very difficult. I've passed on tons of opportunities to buy cowhide rugs, and could have inherited one, but never liked the look.

Stuff I'm excited about, and how I shop cheaply.

Nowhere else but in blogland do people enjoy looking at the stuff someone else bought, which is why I love it here. I like seeing how and where people found great deals, and I have gotten some emails lately requesting some tips on finding great sale prices at popular stores. Since I scored some awesome stuff today when I was only planning on returning a sweater and a wallet, I thought I'd share my strategy with the rest of you.

First, here's what I got:

I am so excited about my coat, since I've been shopping around for a new one for a while now and think I got a great deal considering the quality of the garment compared to what I was wearing (and paid $120 for originally). I'm also in love with my new sweater/blazer since I struggle to find jackets that fit in the bust and this one makes me look quite trim and tall(er). I was returning a sweater I got for Christmas since my boss got the same one and we already look similar enough, but think I'll wear this piece a lot more anyway. Pretty exciting, eh?

Now for the tips. I learned a lot from my mom, who is known for her amazing clearance finds, and find that the following strategies work really well for me:

Shop in store
Unless you have a free shipping code or a large order, you'll get a better deal in person once you add on $8 to get the item you found online. I tend to use websites to scope out things I want, and then "visit them" in person and hope for a markdown.

Shop often
If you only go to a store on Saturday afternoon once a month with everyone else, you won't have much of a chance of scoring that one piece from the previous collection that just got returned and marked down because I'll have already scooped it up on Thursday.

Shop during the work week, if you can
Shipments often arrive on Mondays and Tuesdays, which means to make room for new stuff the staff at your favorite stores will be doing markdowns during the week before the new merchandise hits the floor before the weekend shoppers arrive. If you show up during the week, you'll get first dibs.

Keep an open mind
If you walk around looking only for black pants, you'll be unlikely to find exactly what you want in a single afternoon. However, if you're constantly looking at sale racks then you will have a chance at scoring some $11 pants in your size. I know that some consider this behavior to be counter-productive, but while I may have bought pants without being in dire need of them, I saved $69.

Constantly shop for gifts
I'm known to come across great deals on jewelry and accessories (which don't take much room to store) and buy in bulk, then distribute the items as birthday gifts throughout the year. Banana Republic is one of my favorite sources for cheap jewelry, I get to appear as though I've spent a lot when in reality I sometimes paid about $7 for something that was originally $49. I know this is controversial too, and that sometimes the items aren't returnable, so I only do it for friends I know very well and are sure to like what I choose for them.

Be open to alterations
I look cute in pants hemmed right above my ankle bone - I find it very Audrey-esque. However, because I'm only 5'4" I almost always have to have them hemmed. That means it doesn't matter if I buy short, long, or regular length since it's all getting chopped off anyway. If the 34" inseam pant fits on the top and are on clearance, I'll pay $7 to cut them off and wear the heck out of them all year. My favorite jeans were intended for someone much taller, but I scored them for $11 at Gap and then hemmed them for a grand total of $20. If I weren't hopeless at threading my sewing machine, it would be less.

Find out where the markdowns live
I'm lucky to live in a large city, and most stores I shop at have several locations within a 20 mile radius. I am not shy about chatting with salespeople (I used to be one) and will flat out ask if there's a store where the clearance goods get shipped to. Often, a retailer will keep full-price merch in an affluent location where it's likely to sell faster, and send the markdowns to a store with room for them and the traffic to move it quickly. Gap and LOFT both do this in Dallas, and those are the locations I hit most often (I'm lucky that I work 3 miles from 2 malls).

I know all of this makes me seem like a total shopaholic, and maybe it's true. But I spend a fraction of what others do on a lot of things and clothes make me happy. :) Hopefully this was helpful for those who asked. If you have anything to add, do tell in a comment!

Top Ten 2012 Must Haves

This week, Lucky Magazine published their list of the top ten things you should own in 2012, assuming you already have basic things like classic white shirts and little black dresses. You can check their list out here.

While I am a huge fan of Lucky and look forward to receiving my magazine each month, I must say that I disagree that everyone needs to own a mesh shirt and a shorts suit this year and only about three of the things on their list would make their way into my closet.

However, since I love a good list, I put together a quick roundup of the top 10 things I think could get a lot of wear this year (in no particular order):

If you don't have them already, I think any of the things above would be a wise purchase if you're looking to broaden your horizons a little. I've also been on the lookout for the right leopard belt and art deco everything (which will only get more obvious once The Great Gatsby comes out later this year).

Happy New Year! Hopefully everyone had a wonderful weekend and rang in the new year in a way that made you happy. I had a fun time attending a wedding and seeing friends who I wish lived closer, although my head feels like it's about to pop from sinus pressure.

I'll be back posting about clothes or something similar tomorrow (pending the arrival of inspiration) but I wanted to share some of my 2012 resolutions with you in hopes that I'll be inspired to keep them. I think the card above says it all, and I don't take all of these very seriously, but I think it's good to set goals and make plans. And so, here is what I hope to be up to this year:

Make more real-life friends who blog (perhaps by attending a conference?)

Everyone raves about the friends they've met through blogging, and I will be honest that while I've e-met several wonderfully nice people, I've not made any true friends that I can talk to about the highs and lows of having a very public hobby. My having very little time for this hobby has a lot to do with it, as well as my occasional bouts of shyness.

Wear everything in my closet or get rid of it

I have a ridiculous amount of clothing and jewelry and happily buy more every chance I get. Something's gotta give.

Take an amazing, we-don't-have-kids vacation

Thankfully, I married someone who also values traveling. We've saved enough to go on a proper trip, and now the only question is to where and if anyone is up for joining us.

Restore my (paying) job to something I enjoy doing once again

I used to love my job. Now I love my company and my coworkers, but my day to day tasks don't make me want to get out of bed in the morning. I shall fix this.

Keep making progress on my fitness, and eventually perform proper push-ups

I have a trainer who makes me lunge and squat my butt off, and I need to follow his directions and do my cardio and make myself a priority. (Joe, if you ever see this, feel free to throw it in my face later this year when I am lazy)

Make reading for pleasure a priority

I have been a voracious reader since I was in kindergarten, and blogging has cut way down on my reading time. I miss it and will make time for it.

Put my marriage first

Like many other bloggers, I'm terribly guilty of sitting on the couch next to my husband but not being there in spirit. I'm doing it now while I'm supposed to be watching Pirate Radio. You see, I'm incredibly lucky to have a amazing husband and I'm crazy to put the internet before quality time with him in the second year of our marriage. And so there may be some days in 2012 when I don't post anything new, and that will be ok with me. I promise never to be one of those girls who only posts a pretty photo and three sentences about loving the spring time, and I hope you'll keep coming back for quality rather than quantity.

In an unrelated note, I wanted to share a book I read TWICE this week because I loved it so much. It's short and I read fast, but I could not get enough of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. Even if you don't like historical fiction (Great Britain, Post WWII) this book will make you happy and you should buy it right now.

From the Archives: The Wakefield Twins and The Tanners

Happy Friday, everyone! I hope you've all got fun plans for an awesome New Year's Eve. I've caught the sickness that has been tearing through my office lately and feel awful right now. Hopefully I can kick these germs before Saturday night, when N and I are set to attend a wedding for some dear friends.

Today's post is another collection of old, but good, outfits I made when I was playing around in Polyvore to envision what my favorite 90s characters would be wearing now (if they were real). Here are my predictions for Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield and for DJ, Stephanie, and Michelle Tanner (before I knew how to embed Polyvore code in a blog post).

Elizabeth Wakefield
Elizabeth was getting a journalism degree last time I read about her, and I think she would have stuck with that career path. Now she's living in Silver Lake and writing for the LA Times as well as the occasional piece for Vanity Fair and the Huffington Post. She isn't married, but lives with her boyfriend who published a well-known novel a couple of years ago. She's still not a very adventurous dresser and buys for comfort before style, but Jessica would never let her walking around looking sloppy.

Jessica Wakefield
Jessica also lives in LA, and she's currently dating an actor starring in a vampire show on the CW. They just moved into a house in West Hollywood and she's growing accustomed to photographers taking their picture at Starbucks (she loves it, actually). Jessica's own aspirations of fame never panned out, but she's now one of the most successful modeling agents outside of New York. Her style is sexy and glamorous - still the opposite of her sister.

DJ Tanner
DJ went to college in Boston (class of 1999 since she was going to prom in 1995) in an attempt to take a break from her giant extended family. After graduation she got a job as a TV producer in New York, but 9/11 made her realize she missed being around everyone and she moved back to San Francisco. She and Steve didn't stay together through college and she ended up reuniting with Vipor, her old musician boyfriend who played at the Smash Club. They live together, much to Danny's dismay, in a small apartment in The Mission and she likes wearing very casual, but still conservative outfits to her job as a producer for Good Morning San Francisco (Danny and Becky's show was canceled after 15 years)

Stephanie Tanner
Stephanie is 27 now, working a collection of jobs in Los Angeles along with the occasional commercial and small guest role on crime shows like CSI. She dropped out of college in 2002 and decided to pursue acting instead of degree. So far it's not going well, but not bad enough for her to move back to San Francisco and get a day job. Her style is very hippie/beachy/chic and features lots of clothes DJ didn't want anymore.

Michelle Tanner
Michelle is 23 now and just graduated from Stanford (the school that rejected DJ) with a degree in English. She tries to get freelance writing work and is working on a novel about a huge family without a mother, but currently works for a high end wedding planner in San Francisco. She's really stylish, thanks to her job and Aunt Becky, and spends all her money on expensive clothes by The Row.

I would love to attend the Texas Style Council blogger conference in Austin during SXSW Interactive in March. It's affordable ($45 and relatively nearby!) and looks to be amazing opportunity to meet other bloggers and learn from some of the best.

However, it doesn't look to be something I'd like to attend by myself and I'm not exactly part of the local blogger scene here, so nobody I know will be going.

From the Archives: Wearing Big Necklaces

Today's post is one I wrote for a friend long ago and think it's still helpful for those who are unsure of how to style necklaces. I'm obsessed with statement necklaces and think everyone should give them a shot! Yes, you can wear them and you won't look weird. :)

So many times I've had women tell me "I like your necklace. I wish I could wear something like that, but I would look weird." I can relate to that feeling because up until 2006, I was the same way. I wore a small diamond solitaire on a white gold chain almost every day. I still wear it sometimes, but after college I was pretty poor (not gonna lie) and had to find ways to make my nine outfits look like more than nine outfits.

Since it took some trial and error for me to figure out what works, I thought I'd show how to style a few beginner necklaces in hopes of growing the ranks of Brave Necklace Wearers.

Long Silver Necklace
Besides a solitaire, there isn't another necklace that's easier to wear. I have two, one thick and one that's more delicate, and wear them with every style of outfit I own. I'll throw them on with a tank top and bermuda shorts, or with my work outfits. If you're only getting one, I'd go with something a little on the thicker side so people will see it. As you get comfortable, add a gold or bronze necklace to your collection too.

Colorful Beads
These necklaces take a touch more courage, but make a plain top into an outfit that looks like you planned it. I have this type of necklace in turquoise and red and wear both quite often, especially in the winter with my 3/4 sleeve v-necks, but also with tank tops and dresses in the summer. To prove the versatility, I styled a winter work outfit, a more formal evening look, and super casual summer dress all with the same Fossil necklace.

The Bib
Too many people are afraid of necklaces as big as their hands, but I think they look so great on most people as long as the necklace sits at the neckline of your top (or you're going strapless). If the necklace is bold and bright, like the one below, it still goes with a lot of things but you may have to adjust the length so that it sits in the right spot. I'm not above extending my necklaces with a chain of safety pins to make it line up with my top. I think colorful stones go as well with jeans and a neutral cardigan as with a more formal look for an evening wedding.

Portrait of an Unknown Woman by Vanora Bennett
I'd be Captain Obvious if I posted a Phillippa Gregory book for you, so I'm going with this one instead. The story is historical fiction in the Tudor era, but if focuses on the family of Sir Thomas More instead of Henry VIII. I stayed up all night reading this and if you like historical fiction, you'll enjoy it.

Getting Over It by Anna Maxted
Anna Maxted is my favorite author for non-historical books. Her characters are eerily relateable and the stories are not like the thousand other chick lit books at Barnes and Noble. This book is about a woman dealing with the death of her dad, but it's not a Debbie Downer read, and if you like it you'll probably like all her other books as well.

Digging to America by Anne Tyler
This book is about two families who adopt Korean babies on the same day. One family is Iranian and the other American and the books follows their story as the girls grow up. The story sucks you in quickly and it's a quick read that makes you think about what it means to be American.

I'm a Stranger Here Myself by Bill Bryson
Bill Bryson is my favorite non-fiction author. His travel books are great for when you want to read a little each night and laugh out loud (and learn!). I'm a Stranger Here myself is actually a collection of newspaper columns that he wrote after moving back to America after 20 years in England. If you like his style, you'll like his other books as well.

The Lady and the Unicorn by Tracy Chevalier
Tracy Chevalier wrote The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which was made into that movie with Scarlett Johannson) but I think this book was better. Her books often start with a painting or work of art and then she creates a story about the people who made it - in this case the famous Cluny tapestries depicting a lady and a unicorn. The story is really interesting and it's another book I couldn't put down until 1am when I was about to pass out.

The Virgin Blue by Tracy Chevalier
Yes, same author as above. This book is part mystery, part historical fiction and flips between the story of an American woman who moves to France and her relatives 400 years ago. I read all the time and this story has stuck with me for about 4 years. I just may read it again this summer...

The English American by Alison Larkin
This story is about a British woman who learns that her birth parents are American and she heads to the US to meet them. Hilarity ensues, but not in the ridiculous chick lit way. It's a true story and very entertaining.

Today I'm super excited to be featured by the fabulous ladies of the LOFT team as part of their How Bloggers Wear series. Today's album focuses on New Year's Eve style, and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to put together a party outfit from the 2011 Holiday Collection. (Full disclosure: I was provided a gift a card that paid for most of the outfit)

Since this blog is all about realistic style, I decided to pick something that will fit right in if the party you're attending is more casual than cocktail.

The red cords, top and jewelry are all from LOFT and I think they're a nice alternative to wearing jeans and a black top, which was my previous uniform. As you can see, I still need to work on my posing and photo locations but I'm a big fan of the outfit and have worn it a couple times since this picture was taken. Last week there was a guest post on Dooce about the Baby Sitters Club, which sent me and my friend Julie on a trip down memory lane and led to the discovery of a hilarious blog called What Claudia Wore

I cannot tell you how obsessed I was with the BSC when I was 9-11. I probably had about 90 books once you counted the mysteries and Super Specials (Remember when the club went to NYC together?) and really wanted to live in Stoneybrook instead of Highlands, TX. Once I got to 8th grade I moved on, but I will always love the BSC and the years I kept my local Waldenbooks in business.

I learned that Ann M. Martin has just written a new BSC book (yes!) but it's a prequel and not the "Where are they now" update I was hoping for. Since she's not going to write one and describe their fantastic outfits, I decided to give it a shot my way. I apologize in advance if you're not the right age to enjoy this, but I'm having fun here.

Kristy Thomas
I think Kristy probably grew up to be a teacher/coach who lives with her partner, 2 kids, and dog Louie Jr. in Massachusetts. She played softball in college and is still a tomboy, but not in a hopeless way because her friends Claudia and Stacey take her shopping once a year when she visits them in NYC.

Claudia Kishi
I think Claudia managed to get accepted to RISD (she learned to spell and focused more on her art in high school) and is now working as a designer/painter in NYC. She still dresses like a crazy person and is married to a graphic designer who wears hats that she makes. When she's been drinking, she bitches about how Lady GaGa is stealing her look.

Stacey McGill
Stacey went to NYU and still lives in New York (of course). Since she is so great with numbers, she landed a job in finance, a Wall Street husband, and spends her downtime shopping for Burberry, Louboutins and designer pieces on Gilt.com. She's still close friends with Claudia and they go out for cocktails once a month.

Mary Anne Spier
Mary Anne and Logan didn't stay together after high school. He got a scholarship to the University of Kentucky and she didn't want to leave the east coast. She's now a high school guidance counselor and lives with her husband and young daughter in Connecticut. She and the BSC girls keep up on Facebook, but her life is more about being a mom and visiting Dawn in California. Stacey bought her that fancy diaper bag.

Dawn Schaefer
Dawn is still in California and runs a small vegan restaurant in Santa Monica with her surfer husband. She's all about casual, fair trade clothes (those are PVC sandals) and surfing. She visits Stoneybrook a few times a year to see her mom and Mary Anne, but mostly grew apart from the others since she moved away in 1995.

Mallory Pike
Mallory moved far away from her giant family and does not have or want any children. She went to Northwestern and now works in a library in Chicago and has a snarky blog where she makes fun of chic lit books and Twilight. She and Jessie grew apart after high school, but still see each other at Christmas and laugh about how the residents of Stoneybrook let them be in charge of children at the age of 11.

Jessi Ramsey
Jessie went to Julliard and is a member of a dance company in New York. She's tried out for So You Think You Can Dance a couple of times, but they don't pick ballerinas very often. She lives in a 1 bedroom apartment with two other dancers but wears more than leotards and a ballerina bun these days (thank goodness).

Like so many other people, the Christmas weekend means that N and I will be loading up our dogs and presents into the Escape and embarking on a road trip across Texas to visit our respective parents and grandparents. It's not at all glamorous or relaxing, but we wouldn't have it any other way.

My Christmas outfit series continues today with what I think are some cute options to wear when you're sitting around the house on Christmas morning enjoying a big breakfast and time with your family.

In my opinion, layers will make you look a lot cuter than if you stroll in wearing old leggings, a ponytail, and the college t-shirt you wore to sleep (or am I the only one who does that?) I know the last thing you'll want to do is get dressed again, but adding a top layer or different shirt to what you already had is no big deal and worth the effort. Plus, you'll be glad you did when the cameras come out to document the occasion for Facebook.

Happy Monday! I can't believe that it's already time for Christmas and Hanukkah, and the many gatherings that come along with it. Since so many of us struggle with what to wear when a new outfit isn't an option, I thought I'd devote several posts this week to sharing outfit ideas with a realistic angle.

I say that because, at least in small town Texas where I'm from, holiday gatherings don't always involve glittery jewelry, dresses or even high heels. When your family is sitting on the floor playing Mario Cart with solo cups full of Jack and Coke, it won't do to dress like you're off to have cocktails at Chateau Marmont. At the same time, you're likely to be photographed and you want to at least feel like your outfit is special and flattering. That's where I come in - here's the first in a series of ideas of what to wear this week and next:

Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a nice weekend. N and I attended a beautiful (but chilly) wedding at a hill country venue outside of Austin, TX and then rushed home on Sunday so I could go see Trans Siberian Orchestra and not waste the pair of tickets I won at work. (I did not realize that they're kind of a big deal, it was quite the spectacle... with lasers and 90's rock star hair.)

Happy Friday! I hope everyone had a great week. Mine was busy, as usual, but I think I've turned a corner at work and next week will bring time for internets and blogs now that I'm basically done Christmas shopping (*crosses fingers). I'm excited for N to return from a business trip today, and this weekend we're going to a wedding in Austin so I should get to relax a bit.

Today I wanted to share a quick example of how versatile a giant necklace can be, especially if it's a classic material like tortoise. A lot of people think they can't pull off statement jewelry, but if there was only one fashion tip I could give it, it would be to learn how to pair basic pieces with memorable jewelry and you'll always look dressed up.

Baby it's cold outside: Winter coats and accessories

Winter has officially arrived in Texas, in case you were wondering. I've been freezing my tail off for days, and the coats have officially come out of the closet. Now that I've been walking around in my old coat that I keep meaning to get hemmed and mended, I am noticing lots of gorgeous options on the internets. Plus, I wanted to share some of my top picks for other cold weather accessories that won't make you look like a kid from A Christmas Story.

Let's start with the most important splurge - a nice coat that fits well. I'm dying for a new trench in a bright color like emerald green or bright blue. I'm also drawn to fun details like an unexpected ruffle or gold zipper.

Hi, I'm Haley. I'm newly addicted to brightly colored slim pants.

I used to think that I wasn't cool enough for such a risk, but I tried them on a whim and now I'm hooked. I decided that since it's fine for everyone to walk around in blue pants, so why not other colors?

It started with red cords from LOFT, and now I have the green ones too. Look how I'm wearing them all the time!

Hello lovelies! I hope everyone had a great weekend. I was a Christmas shopping fiend and managed to get about 80% of my gift buying out of the way before a Sunday night movie marathon where I watched Love Actually and The Holiday as I do each year before Christmas.

I will admit that this reader request post is a long time coming, but I was really happy to finally sit down and scout out some comfortable shoe options for my friend Kelly, who is a newly graduated pharmacist and spends 8 hours a day on her feet. She wants some cute shoe options that will look nice with her work pants, and I think I found some good candidates. In my opinion, a sturdy wedge or heel 3 inches or less can be as comfortable as a ballet flat if it offers the right support for your foot and doesn't squeeze your toes. You may recall that I was looking for a geometric print for my living area, and searched high and low for a soft, tufted rug in a modern geometric pattern that I could feel in person. Well it turns out that's nearly impossible unless your budget is much larger than mine. I changed my strategy to include neutral (non-beige) options for the main living area, and scored a great deal at Crate and Barrel thanks to a sale plus coupon and gift card. My Arden Aqua rug should arrive later this week, and it's super soft and thick. The color looks much darker in person than in these photos, with more brown:

And now that I will have a neutral rug in my living area, I'm still looking for bold pattern in my (open plan) dining area where a flat weave rug will work fine since we don't sit around on that floor. I was really excited to discover that one of my favorite designers, Genevieve Gorder, has a new line of Capel rugs launching in 2012 and the prices are not outrageous for hand woven rugs ($898 for a 7x9') but probably a bit out of reach for the dining room. Hopefully there will be sales!

I'm loving the tribal print and the imperfect chevron pattern. However, they'd be an investment compared to other options, such as this Nate Berkus dhurrie priced at $249 for a 5x8. I'd also be able to get a coordinating runner for my kitchen. (It comes in blue, black and gold)

I've also seen this rug all over the internet, always around $250 to $300 for a 5x8.

However, I think my best bet is going to be this rug that's currently 55% off at Rugs USA and is pictured all over the interwebs and Pinterest. It's too bad that I already dropped a lot of money on a rug this week or I'd click the checkout button.

Quick DIY: Wrapping Paper Wall Decor

As much as it makes proper decorators cringe, the reality of my current situation dictates that I figure out temporary solutions for accessorizing my rooms because investing in pieces I truly love is just not a practical use of money when there are floors to replace and a bathroom to be gutted. In a few years, I may be able to spend several hundred dollars on a piece of art I love, but I'm not willing to walk past blank walls until 2014. That means I get creative in the meantime.

I was really excited to see Cavallini wrapping paper for sale at Paper Source for only $3.95 per sheet. The vintage maps and prints are really beautiful, and boast saturated colors and a standard 20x28" size.

One sheet of wrapping paper plus a $19 Ribba frame from Ikea makes a handsome addition to my living room while I figure out what I want for the long term, don't you think?

I think it would also be fun to decorate a little boy's room in a collection of maps and botanical prints for well under $100, or start marking the cities where you've traveled for a personal touch.

I look at a LOT of interior photos in my quest for inspiration that I can recreate at home. Usually, I will pin or save a photo because of a single item or combination of colors. Rarely do I come across a style that's completely me, so imagine how I stopped in my tracks upon seeing the DwellStudio Holiday 2011 catalog.

I love every single piece and that NEVER happens. Too bad I can't run out and stock up, since the prices are a little out of reach in the short term. However, this what I plan to recreate as soon as I can:

Frugal Find: UK Style by French Connection

Like so many other suburban US kids, I grew up wearing a lot of clothes from Sears. However, I've spent the past decade avoiding the store because I don't like overly sexy or overly frumpy clothes, which seem to be the most prevalent options. I had long ago considered Sears to be out of my consideration set when shopping for myself, but seeing one top in a magazine helped me to discover that one of my favorite brands that I can't often afford, French Connection, has created a mass market collection.

UK Style by French Connection has some great pieces that are super affordable, and I will be venturing to Sears this week in hopes of scoring that bow blouse for $23.99 and a cute blazer for under $50!

Sadly, the Sears website is still terrible and all the product shots are blurry, but you get the idea. Has anyone else tried this brand yet? Am I getting my hopes up for nothing, or is it the best kept secret in mass market fashion?

This week I got an email from Jessica of the blog Jessie This, and her question about mixing black and brown pieces together in one outfit totally got the thinking about how so many of our mothers told us never to do that. I know I was hesitant to try it at first, and there are probably lots of ladies still dutifully pairing black with black and brown with khaki or blue.

My (totally amateur) opinion is that you can totally mix brown and black so long as there's enough contrast between the two hues that the pairing looks intentional. A really dark chocolate brown can look like you meant to wear black but it was dark and you didn't realize what shoes you had on until you got to work. However, a rich cognac or camel brown really pops when paired with black and I think more people should try it. That said, here are some options from the internet that illustrate the concept:

Reader Request: Stylish and Practical Winter Footwear

Happy Monday, everyone! I had a great weekend relaxing with friends and playing hostess during our party. I'm finally rested up for another busy week at work, and can't wait to have nine days off for Thanksgiving break. I'm so excited it's a little sad, since I pretty much live with my smart phone in hand and have nightmares about email marketing gone bad.

Last week I got a reader request email from Teresa, a very stylish Iowan who is looking for winter footwear options beyond her Hunter boots. I will freely admit that I'm completely unqualified to write this given that I've grown up in Texas and have seen snow less than a dozen times in 28 years. However, I can internet shop with specific criteria in mind, and think I've come up with some good options that will be cute but practical (i.e. no suede, semi waterproof) and serve her well when the weather turns cold and wet this year.

If I were dressing for snowy weather every year, I'd invest in some of the waterproof Timberland boots that look way more stylish than your typical all-weather boot. Teresa can pair them with skinny jeans or skirts, and look more dressed up than she would in her wellies.

Teresa could also invest in some leather ankle boots that will keep the snow and water away from her feet, and look nice with some colored cords for weekend or skinny pants for work.
