What to Wear: Holiday Parties, Continued

Even though it makes me Captain Obvious, I will state for the record that holiday party season is now in full swing.  Every weekend, and some Thursdays, are filled with engagements and for some of us it's one of the few excuses to dress up all winter.  Last week an old friend from high school (hi Sarah!) asked for some ideas on what to wear for a company party at a swanky restaurant, and I had a good time pulling together some options.

First, I will say that the obvious, most foolproof outfit is a little black dress and a statement necklace.  If your company is conservative, or you'll be with clients (who should never be confronted with your sexiness) then that is a great option and you should probably disregard what I'm about to post.  If you have a little more leeway, here are some fun ideas for outfits that don't necessarily involve a black cocktail dress:

I love all the cool prints you see in dresses right now, and layering a black blazer adds coverage if you're not a fan of bare arms and makes the whole outfit a little edgier.  I also like the idea of wearing a candy colored pencil skirt usually reserved for work with a sexy top and statement shoes.

holiday party 2

Haute Hippie sequin tank

Gold tank
target.com
Dorothy Perkins sleeveless top
$35 - dorothyperkins.com
Ponte jacket
topshop.com
Slim fit pants

H m
$32 - hm.com
Red Or Dead short mini skirt
$80 - bankfashion.co.uk
Gorjana

For those looking to work in some leather, I like the idea of an embellished skirt with a basic camisole and blazer.  Or, pair an inexpensive skirt from a store like H&M with a well-cut top (ignore the peplum if that's not your thing) that will elevate the whole outfit.

Now I want to get dressed up for a party.  Bah humbug.

P.S. In case you missed them, I posted other holiday party outfit ideas here and here

All I Want for Christmas... at Capital Style

Hello!  Although today is not a normal posting day, I wanted to let you know that I'm contributing to a guest series over my e-friend Emily's blog Capital Style.  The theme is "All I Want for Christmas" and it will come as no surprise to my family and IRL friends that books are at the top of my list.

How I look when I'm reading... always.  Disregard any rumors you hear about me curled up in the couch corner with an electric snuggie. (Yes, it's a thing and it's wonderful)

If you want to see the titles I'm hoping to give and get this year, please stop by and check out Emily's blog (and styling services) while you're there.  She's great, and even I learn lots from her outfit posts!

5 Things Friday

Good morning!  Can you believe we're already a week into December?  I've bought exactly two presents so far and am starting to freak out since I'm usually done shopping by now.  I expect to place some serious orders online this weekend, but while I was shopping, I came across a few things worth sharing on the internet.

1. I live in a home with a ginormous fancy tv, and I don't believe in hiding it, but I want to make wall behind it feel less like a blank slate. I was excited to come across this room by Sarah Richardson, and will be creating my own row of photographs, though likely frames via Ikea because I'm a cheapskate.

2. I am in love with this wallet.  Seriously, why do I keep coming across perfect wallets when I have a perfectly good one in my purse.  Where were these in 2010 when I was shopping?!

3.  Spoonflower has begun selling custom temporary wallpaper for $60 per roll.  Our lives have been changed, ladies.

4. I picked up these sunglasses at LOFT and they are my new favorites.  At only $24, I don't feel nervous about losing or breaking them, and they're almost identical to their $95 Warby Parker counterparts.

5. I'm also in love with this sweater jacket, and I am sad to be between between sizes.  I refuse to buy things with the intent of weight loss, and the size medium is a bit too snug to zip comfortably, but I look like I'm swimming in the large.  However, if you're slightly smaller than a size 10 get the medium and you'll wear the crap out of this soft, cozy moto-style sweater that looks super cute with jeans or stretchy pants for Christmas morning.

Bonus 6th Things. At 29, I have lots of pregnant friends and am newly aware of the challenge expectant moms face when it comes to fashion.  However, LOFT has several super chic pieces for moms to be:

And with that, I bid you good weekend... and good luck shopping!

Gift Guide: Women Shopping For Men

Today's gift guide is the opposite of Monday's round-up: a collection of gifts for women shopping for the men in their lives.  I'm perhaps not the expert here, but I have a lot of guy friends and a huge practical streak that keeps me from suggesting luxury tee shirts or yet another $40 bottle opener for a person who happily uses one he got for free in college and always will.

I've tried to include a variety of price ranges and items to appeal to young city guys or even my own southern cowboy dad:

2013 gifts for guys

Clockwise from top left:
Plastic Flask - Will not set off metal detectors at sporting events.  Under $8.  Enough said.
Company K- This book is an amazing account of World War I that I enjoyed reading myself, and the men I've convinced to read it gave it their stamp of approval
Eddie Bauer Jacket - So classic, wear-it-forever style.  A bit of an investment, but worth it if your guy will wear it often.
Logitech Harmony Remote - So wonderful, I included it last year too!  This universal remote combines up to 8 devices into one and makes a 5-step Blu-ray watching procedure as easy as  pressing the "watch a movie" button.
Diesel Duffel Bag - I think every guy needs a proper duffel bag that will keep him looking respectable in airports and in front of your family and friends.
Wood Grain iPhone Case - I love the look of this rubber case from J.Crew, and it will work as well for dad as for your brother
Breaking Bad Blu-Ray - Best show ever.  If your guy hasn't gotten hooked yet, it's time.
Craft Beer of the Month Club - $38 per month for 12 craft beers from indie breweries across the country

What are your go-to gifts for the men in your life?

Gift Guide: Men Shopping for Women

Today's post is actually not intended for all of you who read this blog regularly.  Crazy, I know.  However, I hope you'll keep reading in the event that you'll consider sharing it or forwarding it to the men in your life who struggle with Christmas shopping.

I help a lot of male friends and coworkers select gifts for their wives, girlfriends, moms, and sisters and I generally follow the same guidelines that I'll be sharing now.  From what I hear, the presents I pick are generally a hit, so here are some suggestions in my first ever gift guide for men:

Gift guide for men - 1

The cardinal rule of shopping for women (unless you are an expert) is to avoid things that require you to know a size.  Luckily, there are tons of options when it comes to accessories!  If the woman you're buying for is known to wear bright jewelry, a classic but bold piece like ones above tend to be universally appealing.  You don't have to spend a fortune, but should be suspicious of anything less than $40.  The piece should feel fairly heavy when you pick it up - if it's really light, it's probably plastic.

Most women will also have use for a classic clutch purse.  Unless you/she has an aversion to it, real leather is the way to go, and if possible you should sneak into the closet and see what she already has.  If black leather or metallic seems too basic, a pop of color is also popular.  You should expect to spend $70-150 on a quality piece.

Gift guide for men - 2

Another popular option is the "forever watch" - classic gold or silver face with leather or metal strap that will never go out of style.  If you're willing to spend $150-250, you can get a designer watch like a Michael Kors of Kate Spade that many women drool over on Pinterest.  While there are many similar styles out there, beware of lookalike "fashion watches" that are under $50 and unlikely to last.

If she doesn't already have one, a great large, leather tote bag is usually a welcome gift.  They're great for weekend trips, or as an everyday bag for work, and you can find some great options for around $50-150.  Stores like TJ Maxx will have a good selection at affordable prices, as will some larger department stores.  Beware of PVC bags with shiny finishes, and hardware that looks and feels like coated plastic.

Finally, there is no shame in giving a well-selected gift card... unless it's for your wife or girlfriend and she did not specifically ask for it.  However, if you're shopping for a sister, other relative or friend, money to spend at her favorite store is always welcome.  Above are some suggestions for 20-30 something women that are unlikely to go unspent.

Hopefully this was helpful, and will keep some women from unwrapping a Britney Spears perfume gift set or an at-home cotton candy machine (unless that's her favorite thing).  Does anyone else have any suggestions for the men shopping with good intentions?
