I long to be able to put my hair up into cute styles like these and head off to work:

I have tried and failed at recreating all of these styles, especially since bobby pins can't hold the weight of my hair and tend to slide out. However, I refuse to give up. I'm asking you, internet, is there any casual updo that works for those of us with super thick hair? I've tried sock buns, spin pins, and everything in between... perhaps what I need most is practice?

ReplyDeleteThe spin pins don't work?? those do wonders on me. Try the "fun bun" on beautydepartment.com, their tutorial is super easy and I think it would hold for your hair.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately I can't offer any advice because I am in the same boat. I have a head full of thick, but fine straight silky hair... I know it sounds like I shouldn't be complaining because people pay good money to get their hair straightened, but aside from your average pony tail/ bun, I can't get it to do much. Please share when you find something that works!
ReplyDelete@Tamra - I need multiple sets of spin pins to hold my hair up, and even then it's just a basic bun :-/
ReplyDeleteI couple ideas would be the messy bun, or putting it up in sections. When I've had to deal with masses of thick, straight hair it seems to help to section it out and put it up in sections.

ReplyDeleteMy hair is super heavy just like yours. Bobby pins just fall out! I've thought about trying more heavy-duty pins (like the no slip ones, or maybe just not the cheapest ones I see).
ReplyDeleteI've had trouble too, having long, thick, wavy hair. I used to part it and use two spin pins in two buns at the back of my head, but lately I've been using four spin pins to put it all up in one bun on the crown of my head. With a couple loose strands, it feels very high chignon-y. I love it as my go-to after shower hair do, as I don't usually use a hair dryer.
ReplyDeleteThese are totally fabulous!!! I love that second one...I can't say my hair is super heavy, it's pretty middle of the road, but looong and so it tends to not cooperate...usually I have to secure things with elastics first and then do the bobby pins...
